It feels wrong to even mention it in September, but Christmas really has come early this year with the arrival of my present from my parents – walking poles, which I was keen to start using before the Lake District challenge, now less than 4 weeks away!
The poles arrived on Friday, just in time for a walk along the North Downs Way from Merstham to Dorking at the weekend. With plenty of ups and downs, it was a great first test – the path took us through Gatton Park past the Millennium standing stones to the top of Reigate Hill.
There were plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the views from the top of the ridge as we continued on to Colley Hill and Juniper Hill before reaching the top of Box Hill. There, I made the most of the late summer sunshine with the best ice cream I’ve had all summer!

The training will be tested in three weeks’ time when we are in the Lake District but I am really enjoying getting out for more longer walks at the weekend. And I can heartily recommend the ice cream at the top of Box Hill!
