Key learning this week is that you cannot afford to cut corners on kit quality – particularly your boots. On the second day of the 3 Peaks Challenge (Scafell Pike), my right boot started to come apart and by Day 3 (Snowdon) it required major first aid with the help of guide Dr. Chris and her faithful gaffer tape.
Those boots were functional and comfortable and cheap in the grand scheme of things – but were clearly not built to last. That could cause a real problem half way up Kilimanjaro, as I wouldn’t be able to pop to the local Snow & Rock and get another pair!
So I am now the proud owner of a pair of boots much more suited to the challenge – and with plenty of time to break them in.
Look out for next week’s update – well – next week!
