After a long day of travelling and a few missed flights due to weather delays, Team Ubuntu has arrived in Tanzania, safe and sound. Kati, Rob, Rodri, Ana and Ernesto made their connecting flight in Amsterdam and arrived at Kilimanjaro International Airport on schedule. They then had a 40 minute coach journey to the Weru Weru River Lodge at about 10:30pm local time, where they enjoyed supper and settling into their rooms.
Not long later – miraculously with most of their luggage – the rest of the team arrived at Kilimanjaro Intl after an adventure involving a very quick stopover at Nairobi and lots of sprinting through airports to make it onto planes just as the doors were closing! During the transfer to the lodge, we were treated to the sight of Kilimanjaro lit up by the moon. Awe-inspiring and stunningly beautiful! Kirsty, Paul Lehner, Paul Marklew, Rolf, James, Rickkie, Pippa and Kirstin finally arrived at the Lodge at about 1am.
Arrival at Kili Intl
This morning at breakfast, Team Ubuntu was reunited to the glorious sight of a certain (very large in real life) mountain looming above them in brilliant sunshine!

After breakfast and a quick photocall, the team gathered for a Kit Briefing with Mike and Christine. The only fallout from yesterday’s travel challenges are three pieces of missing luggage for Rolf, James and Robert. We are all very optimistic that everything will arrive on tonight’s flight, landing at 8:30pm. But if not, we have contingency plans in place and Team Ubuntu has showed their usual generosity of spirit by offering to share kit, sweets, socks and hats, with a few things on hold for hiring, if necessary.
The team is spending the rest of today relaxing, meeting their head guide and saving their energy for Day One of the climb.
Please support Team Ubuntu’s efforts…
One final word of congratulations to this brilliant team: the current fundraising total of more than €31,000 for UNICEF is just €600 short of the company record set by the Ascenders. We’d LOVE to be able to tell Team Ubuntu that they have smashed the record during the next couple of days. Please visit their JustGiving link and give whatever you can…every little really does help: https://www.justgiving.com/companyteams/ubuntu2020
All money raised on behalf of Team Ubuntu goes to helping the world’s most vulnerable children – children whose lives are being ravaged by war, famine, poverty, natural disaster and climate change.
