K-Day -13 weeks – get organised!
November 21, 2018

After returning to my usual training regime, I have had a few weeks to reflect on what I have achieved so far – 6 Peaks in one month! I can tell my fitness levels have dramatically changed in the space of a month due to completing these. My stamina has got better, my breathing technique has got better & my pace has improved.

Completing the National 3 peaks with Team Twende was the first real test for me to believe I can do this. I must admit I had my moments where I wanted to give in and stop, but with the amazing support of the team I succeeded to the summit of all 3 peaks. Each peak gave me a new insight into the aspects that I need more training in/things to be prepared for. Ben Nevis gave us some jolly snow which proved I need to buy more insulated gloves! Scafell Pike was the one I was dreading the most due to steepness and showed I did indeed need more practice at sharper inclines. By the time Snowden came around I felt more confident using my walking poles – which came in handy to save me from the strong winds! All in all I really enjoyed the weekend and I’m proud of what myself and the team have achieved. My legs didn’t seem to suffer too much either which is a bonus!

However, looking back at the gruelling Yorkshire Peaks it’s hard to decide which was my favourite part; the 4.30am alarm, the 12 mile trek from Pen-y-ghent to Whernside desperate for a wee, crying up Ingleborough or downhill in complete darkness. This challenge was the hardest part of any of my training I have done so far. I am very grateful for having done the National Peaks beforehand as this one tested all elements of strength! During September Dan and I climbed the 1st Peak Pen-y-ghent, and this time around I kept saying to him ‘I’m feeling so much better this time’ all the way up. Shame this feeling didn’t last too long….

The satisfaction of finishing this is overwhelming, because it was truly horrendous and I couldn’t move for 4 days after! Big Congratulations to Dan, Keris & Joe for what they have achieved during this challenge! The guide assured us this would be worse than any day on Kilimanjaro so I am still optimistic 🙂 Just need to keep the motivation alive for training!

Hang in there, Rachel! Sounds like the training so far has been tough but I’m sure it’ll pay off. Good work!
